The awakening of India’s Digital era has modified the GST in many ways, specifically how registered assessees sign and file their returns.

What’s new?

Digital signing and online filing, which was already pervasive in the filing of Income Tax Returns, has now been introduced for the filing of GST returns. This is a drastic step to simplify the entire GST process, especially for registered dealers with numerous businesses spread over the country.

The singing and filing of documents takes place in the GST Common Portal (GSTN). It is compulsory for all taxpayers to be registered here. Registration on the GSTN is free and companies need only register once for both state and central filing.

The GSTN also allows businesses to designate employees as authorised signatories. Thus, enabling them to sign and file returns on behalf of the business, as well as to make payments online. Any person registered on the Authorised Person tab of the GST Common Portal for a venture can sign and file GSTR on behalf of that venture.

What is the process to e-sign your GST Returns ?

  • Firstly, the GST tax payer has to log in to the GST common portal and click E-sign button.
  • The GST Common Portal prompts the taxpayer to enter the Aadhaar number of the Authorized Signatory.
  • After validating the Aadhaar Number, the GSTN sends a request to UIDAI system to dispatch an OTP.
  • UIDAI system dispatches an OTP to the registered e-mail address and mobile number of the Aadhaar card.
  • The GST System prompts the tax payer to enter the OTP.
